Why Packing Quality Decides Arrival Quality

Steel coils travel by truck, crane, container, and ocean vessel before reaching your warehouse. Each step introduces risks:

  • Moisture causes rust — especially on cold-rolled and coated surfaces
  • Impact during handling crushes edges and distorts coil shape
  • Friction between coils scratches the surface finish
  • Salt air on ocean voyages accelerates corrosion on unprotected steel

Export packing exists to neutralize all four risks. When packing is skipped or rushed to save cost, the resulting damage claims are almost always more expensive than the packing itself.

Standard Export Packing for Steel Coils

1. Surface Protection

The first layer directly on the steel:

  • Plastic film wrapping: seals out moisture and prevents scratches between coils

2. Edge Protection

Coil edges are the most vulnerable point — a single hard impact can ruin the inner wraps:

  • Edge protectors: plastic or cardboard C-shapes fitted over both edges of the coil
  • Steel banding at edges: additional metal strapping around the coil circumference prevents edge deformation
  • Corner boards: placed under strapping to prevent the straps from cutting into the coil

3. Outer Wrapping

The visible outer layer:

  • Heavy-duty woven plastic or tarpaulin wrap: weather-resistant outer covering
  • Full coverage: the wrap must cover the entire coil, including the bore (center hole), to keep out moisture and dirt
  • Reinforced bore protection: wooden or plastic plugs in the center hole where cranes insert C-hooks

4. Wooden Cradle / Skid

For export, coils are almost always mounted on a wooden cradle:

  • Purpose: keeps the coil off the ground, prevents rolling, and provides lifting points for forklifts
  • Standard construction: two or more longitudinal wooden beams, sized to the coil's width
  • Strapping to the cradle: steel bands fix the coil securely to the wood so it can be lifted as one unit

5. Strapping

  • Steel strapping: 3-5 bands around the coil and cradle, tightened to prevent any movement
  • Strapping protection: cardboard or plastic corner protectors under every band

  • Edge protectors are fitted on both edges of every coil
  • Strapping is tight — loose bands mean the coil moved during transport to the port
  • Markings are readable and match the packing list
  • Wooden cradles are sound — cracked beams and protruding nails are unacceptable for export
  • Bore protection is in place where C-hooks will be used

Is VCI paper mandatory for steel coil export?
