Amazon FBA Prep Inspection: FNSKU, Barcode and Labeling Checks Before Shipping from China
Why This Matters
Amazon does not care how good your product is. If the label is wrong, the units are unfulfillable — and you paid the freight, the duty and the FBA fee to send them there anyway. Barcode and labeling problems are the most common and the most expensive FBA mistakes because they are cheap to fix at the factory and impossible to fix at the fulfillment center.
A pre-shipment inspection with an FBA prep check costs one inspection day. A shipment rejected or re-labeled at the warehouse costs a removal order, a re-labeling fee per unit, and three to six weeks of lost selling time. This guide covers exactly what our inspectors verify on FBA-bound orders, and what you should see in the report before your cartons leave the factory.
What Amazon Actually Rejects
From our inspection files, FBA prep failures cluster into five groups:
| Failure | Typical cause | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| FNSKU missing or wrong | Factory applied the supplier label instead of yours | Re-labeling fee per unit, or unfulfillable stock |
| Barcode will not scan | Low-res print, glossy label, damaged edge | Manual processing charge per unit |
| Label on the wrong face | No placement spec given to the factory | Repacking at the FC |
| Poly bag without suffocation warning | Bagging done to the wrong market rule | Non-compliant, units blocked |
| Wrong bundle or set contents | Packing line mixed similar SKUs | Refunds and account health risk |
The pattern is always the same: the sample was labeled correctly, the mass production was not, and nobody checked the cartons.
The FNSKU and Barcode Checks
1. FNSKU matches the ASIN and your seller account
Every unit must carry your FNSKU, not the manufacturer's UPC or part number. Our inspectors scan the FNSKU on the unit and confirm it resolves to the correct ASIN, then compare the physical product against the listing title, color and size variant.
Give the factory a printed label spec sheet with an actual sample label taped to the first carton. Verbal instructions are the number one cause of mixed-up SKUs.
2. Barcode scannability — test it, do not look at it
A barcode that looks fine to the eye can fail a scanner. Our standard test:
| Test | Method | Pass criteria |
|---|---|---|
| First-read rate | Scan 20 units with a 2D scanner | 20/20 on the first attempt |
| Print quality | Visual grade under 4× magnification | Clean bars, no voids or smears |
| Label surface | Laminate or matte check | No glare, no bubbling |
| Edge placement | Measure distance to carton edge | At least 5 mm clear margin |
| Quiet zone | Measure white space either side | Meets symbol spec, not truncated |
A unit that needs two or three scan attempts will be charged as a manual-processing unit at the fulfillment center.
3. Label placement, on the right face and flat
Confirm the agreed placement: FNSKU on the unit, FNSKU or box label on the carton, orientation, and no label over a seam, corner or opening. Labels bridging a fold will lift in transit and stop scanning.
4. Labeling accuracy at batch level
Check labels from different production dates on the line. Batch drift is where wrong SKUs, old versions and duplicated labels appear. Compare unit label to carton label to packing list, three ways, for the sampled cartons.
Packaging and Prep Requirements
Poly bagging and suffocation warning
Bags must meet the market rule for the destination: opening size, thickness, and the suffocation warning text and language. Verify the exact wording, font size and placement, not just the presence of a bag.
Bundles and multipacks
For a 3-pack or a set, confirm the bundle is physically assembled as the listing describes, that the bundle label matches the bundle ASIN, and that the individual units inside are not separately labeled in a way that conflicts.
Carton weight and dimensions
Confirm the carton weight against the FBA limit for the category and that no carton is over the manual-handling threshold without the required team-lift label. Measure cartons, do not trust the packing list — an over-length carton is rejected at intake.
Fragile and sharp items
Glass, ceramic and knife blades need the prep your listings promise: bubble wrap, corner protection, blade guards, and the correct warning label on the correct face.
Product Compliance Checks Before FBA
FBA prep is not a substitute for product compliance. Before the cartons are sealed, confirm:
- Testing documentation for the destination market — CPSIA, FDA food-contact, EU REACH, or Mexico's NOM scheme as applicable.
- Country of origin marking on product or packaging, where the destination requires it.
- Warning labels in the correct language for the marketplace.
- Instruction manuals present, correct version and correct language.
Sampling and AQL for FBA Prep Orders
Prep checks are faster per unit than a full functional inspection, so sample sizes can be larger. Our practical plan:
| Order size (units) | Units checked (AQL 2.5) | Max major defects | Extra actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 151–280 | 32 | 2 | Scan test on all sampled units |
| 281–500 | 50 | 3 | Above plus carton label audit |
| 501–1200 | 80 | 5 | Above plus full carton review |
| 1201–3200 | 125 | 7 | Above plus prep process observation |
Treat a wrong or missing FNSKU as a critical defect — zero tolerance, regardless of how few units are affected. For the statistics behind these numbers, see our AQL sampling guide.
Combine Prep With a Real Quality Check
Labeling is only half the job. The same inspection day should also cover workmanship, function and packing, using the same five-view photo standard so every unit that fails prep is documented from the angle a claim needs.
A prep-only check on a defective batch just gets defective units into the warehouse faster. Insist on both, in one report, with the defect photos and the label photos in separate sections.
Red Flags in an FBA Prep Factory
- Labels printed on a desktop inkjet instead of a thermal or laser label printer.
- No scanner anywhere on the packing line.
- FNSKU labels already attached to cartons from a previous buyer's order.
- "We ship to Amazon every week" offered as the answer to a labeling question.
- Poly bags sealed with staples or tape over the label.
FAQ
Can Amazon fix a wrong FNSKU for me?
Sometimes, for a per-unit fee, if the units are otherwise compliant and the label can be applied over the existing one. Amazon may also mark them unfulfillable and require removal. Either way you pay twice and lose weeks.
What is the difference between an FNSKU, a UPC and an ASIN?
The ASIN identifies the listing, the UPC identifies the product for retail, and the FNSKU is Amazon's own identifier for your inventory. FBA units must carry the FNSKU, not the UPC, unless you are in a commingled program.
Do I need a poly bag on every unit?
It depends on the product and the marketplace rules. Fragile, liquid, and items that could damage or be damaged by handling usually do. Confirm which of your SKUs need bagging, and what the suffocation warning must say.
How long before the shipment do I book an FBA prep inspection?
Book when production is finished and the packing line is running, at least five to seven working days before the vessel or air cut-off. Prep problems are fixed on the line; once cartons are palletized and staged, fixing them gets expensive.
Can you inspect both the product and the FBA prep in one visit?
Yes, and it is the right way to do it. One inspector, one report, product defects and prep defects documented separately so you can push each issue to the right party.
Get the Label Right Before You Pay the Freight
An FBA shipment with a labeling defect is not a quality problem — it is a logistics problem you chose not to check. Have the labels, barcodes and prep verified at the factory, while the cartons are still open.
