The Three Weight Numbers You Must Know
1. Max Gross Weight (Container Rating)
The maximum total weight of the container plus its contents:
- 20ft standard container: typically 30,480 kg (67,200 lb)
- 40ft standard container: typically 32,500 kg (71,650 lb)
- 40ft high cube: typically 32,500 kg (71,650 lb)
This number is stamped on the container door — always read the actual door plate, because ratings vary by container type and owner.
2. Tare Weight
The weight of the empty container:
- 20ft: approximately 2,200-2,400 kg
- 40ft: approximately 3,700-3,900 kg
- 40ft high cube: approximately 3,800-4,000 kg
3. Payload (Max Cargo Weight)
What you can actually put inside:
Payload = Max Gross Weight − Tare Weight
- 20ft: roughly 28,000 kg of cargo
- 40ft: roughly 28,600-28,800 kg of cargo

VGM: Verified Gross Mass (SOLAS Requirement)

- VGM = total weight of the container + cargo + packing + lashing
- The VGM must be submitted to the carrier and terminal before loading
- Two acceptable methods: (1) weigh the packed container, or (2) calculate = tare + all cargo + all packing
- No VGM, no loading — the container will not be accepted

- If a truck scale is available at the factory or port, weigh each loaded container before sealing

- For heavy cargo (steel, machinery, stone): calculate how many pieces fit before you start lifting
- Keep a margin: never load to the absolute limit — the actual scale reading may surprise you
- Distribute weight correctly: heavy items centered, not concentrated on one end
